Dear Reader,
This site was created as a part of our Culturally Relevant Materials for Diverse Learners class. We have selected many different children’s books, award winning books, online resources, and professional articles focused around the theme of Native American literature. We selected a range of books for students with different reading levels extending from kindergarten to late middle school. These resources will be great for teachers that are looking to create a more culturally diverse classroom.
With our exposure to different types of literature throughout this quarter, we wanted to create a source for teachers to find books that do not perpetuate the negative stereotypes that Native American people struggle with daily. We believe that there is not enough time spent on the Native American cultures in schools and that culturally relevant and accurate information can open windows for students into the lives of the Native American people. A lot of these resources are written by authors with Native American backgrounds and provide information about their heritage in the back of the books.
On this website, you will find resources with a variety of topics that are important to Native American culture. When looking for award winners under this theme, we found that Native American literature was underrepresented. Because of this, some of the award winning books do not follow this theme. This is yet another reason why we wanted to bring attention to including this culture in our everyday literature and classrooms. With themes such as relationships with people and the world around us, living a healthy life, and persevering through hardships, these resources will be extremely valuable to have when approaching the topic of Native American culture within your classroom. Many of the themes covered on this page are things that are important within Native American cultures and can be taught both through literature and oral legends throughout history.
We hope that this blog will provide many different practical resources that can be used in the classroom.
Sincerely,
Emma Barrell and Chloe Unruh
